If I could go back and tell my younger creative self-one thing, it would be this: Treat your hobby like a business.

Start talking about your work like it’s a business, not a hobby.

It sounds so simple, right? But that tiny shift changed everything for me.

Why You Need to Treat Your Hobby Like a Business

Years ago, I was just like so many creatives — painting, making things, getting compliments, and giving most of it away for free. I loved what I did, but I wasn’t treating it like a business. I didn’t talk about it like it were valuable. I wasn’t owning my worth, and I wasn’t asking for the sale.

Until one day, while painting this mural, it hit me.

If I wanted people to take my work seriously, I had to take it seriously first.

I realised that the way we speak about our work sets the tone for how others perceive it. If I kept calling it a “little side project” or “just something I do for fun,” how could I expect anyone to see it as worthy of investment?

From Passion to Profit: How to Treat Your Hobby Like a Business

It’s not about being salesy. It’s about showing up confidently and letting people know you’re open for business.

I realized the only difference between a struggling artist and a successful one was how they showed up. So I made a decision to start treating my talent like a real business. And friend — that was the turning point.

Fast forward to today, and that mindset shift has helped me build a thriving business doing what I love. I teach other women creatives how to do the same — without reinventing the wheel or waiting for “someday.”

That’s when I made the shift. I stopped waiting for opportunities to fall into my lap and started creating them.

If you’ve been sitting on your creative gifts, unsure how to monetize them or afraid to put a price on your passion — I get it. But here’s what I’ve learned: your work has value, and people are willing to pay for it when you present it with confidence.
